This Week in Etsy Steampunk

I haven't written about Steampunk lately- and I apologize for that. I've been spending a lot of times outdoors since we've been having a very, very mild winter here in Texas. So, I took advantage of every nice day I could. I do wish, however, that we could at least have one week of freezing weather so that I can break out my flamingo slippers. (Yes, I have adorable flamingo slippers!)

Ahem. I seem to have gotten off track. Sorry about that.

This week we're visiting the Steampunk electronics side of Etsy. I'm on the hunt for new headphones, speakers, and maybe...just maybe... a new desk lamp! My current lamp has definitely seen better days, and it needs to be replaced. So, on an adventure I go to find one.

Let's get started, shall we?

When I listen to music at night, I never want to wake up the whole household with my Avatar or Steam Powered Giraffe, so I grab my cheapest pair of headphones. However, they are starting to fade in sound... I like these!
They vaguely remind me of an old aviator helmet. I'm not sure why, but aren't they awesome?

Staying on the topic of music, bluetooth speakers! I recently went on a quest to find some geeky ones, but now I want to add to that collection of steampunk!
I come from a family of photographers. So, when I came across this I made a little happy squee! It's a vintage AGFA B2 Shur Shot Camera, so this would fit perfectly!

We come to USB drives. I have quite a few (including a Luke Skywalker Stormtrooper from Mimobot), but why not keep adding to that Star Wars collection? You'll love this one.
Not only is it geeky, it also has a steampunk flair! Not to mention that it's a keychain. The best part about that? It allows me to take it anywhere with me and I don't have to worry about losing it.

Since I'm on the search for a new lamp, I found one that could be absolutely perfect. It's adorable. It's just the right size for my computer desk.

I'd like to introduce you to this little "robot" lamp!
See what I mean about it being adorable? Somehow, someway, I must have it!!

Now, I'm ending this with a little bonus! If you need an alarm, I have found that may just work.

I may be rethinking my need for a new alarm clock now.

Ghostbusters 2016 Movie Review *May Contain Spoilers*

(NOTE: These are my opinions, so take what you read with a grain of salt. Many people loved the movie!)

I finally took the plunge and watched the reboot of "Ghostbusters." I put it off for nostalgic reasons, and I wanted to make sure when I finally DID watch it, I would watch it with an open mind. What can I say? I usually do watch remakes/reboots with no expectations going in. However, because a lot of us grew up with the OG (original Ghostbusters), I had to make sure I was going to keep that in mind as I started the DVD.

Now, I will say that this movie had everything going for it. Between the comedic one-liners and the special effects, I was geared and ready to go! I sat down with a slice (or two) of cheese pizza, a glass of sweet tea, and remote in hand. It was time to start the movie.

I'm sad to say that I didn't enjoy the movie as much as I thought I would. Don't get me wrong, there were parts I absolutely LOVED. I loved the 4 women leads, they were all funny in their own way and sometimes I couldn't help but still laugh at a joke a few more minutes later. I also loved all the cameos- from Ozzy Osbourne to the original members (minus Ramis) from the original film, Slimer, and.... of course... Stay Puft. I didn't see those coming at all- which made it even more magical. (Yes, I said "magical.")

Why didn't I like it? I, personally, didn't feel like the characters had any depth. They all seemed pretty one note for me. Holtz seemed more outgoing of them all. Of course, I would too if I could come up with ghost-catching devices.

It also seemed as if the script had no real direction and the plot seemed flat. Don't get me wrong, it was funny (like I've said before), but it seemed very slow finally getting to the point of this maniac hell-bent on releasing hundreds of ghosts.
McCarthy, Wiig, McKinnon, Jones (l to r)

I wouldn't say this film was particularly horrible, because it did have its moments. However, for me it's not one I'm probably going to watch over and over. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

My First 5K Run?? Yikes!

You read that right. I have made a (big) decision to join my first EVER 5k run with my sister. My city's local police department is holding a memorial run for officers killed in the line of duty, as well honoring those who support and their commitment to their city across the nation.

I have an uncle who was once a police officer, and while he is still very much alive- I've always supported our men in blue. I'm in no way getting political in this particular post, so don't think it's headed that way.

I am going to be honest. I am terrified that I've even entertained the idea of getting with thousands of people who are more in shape than I am to run so many miles. When you have anxiety, you fear of getting judged and have so many questions running through your mind. "What if I can't complete it?" "What if I overheat and pass out?"

I've mentioned before that helping anxiety and getting healthy really are best friends... Except when it comes to doing something you've never done before. I'm still walking/running as much as I can. Texas never has a normal winter, so when it gets warm, it gets warm. With the race being smack dab in the middle of May, it will be HOT!! So, in order to acclimate my body to the heat, running or walking long miles will have to be a daily thing- even if it's 85 degrees outside. (Plenty of water will be had.)

What made me want to join? Well, there are several reasons. One being it will be a great way to support my local PD. Also, it will help in overcoming one, big anxiety obstacle- and that's something to be proud of.

I've started reading on training for 5Ks, and what you will need to do to get in shape for the 3.1 miles of running. Lucky for me, I have a great work-out partner who will get me into tip-top (or close to it) shape. I have several months, so I think I will be okay.

Artist Highlight: Lisa Zador from Curious Portraits

I'd like to apologize for my absence lately. I've been very quite busy.... I'll update you guys in the next post!

However, for now, we have another artist I'd absolutely love to share! Lisa Zador and her Curious Portraits was too adorable to pass up. Now, when I say that- I mean it. You have cats in sailor costumes, ducks, cows. I'm pretty sure you get the point. Try not to have a cuteness overload at some, will ya?

For my octopus-loving friends, this one you will need right next to your other octopus art. Trust me. I already want this one.
$20.00 + (depending on size)

Why yes, I did fall in love with this. Wouldn't you?

Remember from your childhood about "Humpty Dumpty"? Funny how they never mention that it's an egg falling, but I think I'm getting off track here. If want food art in your kitchen, say hello to the Egg Man!
$20.00 (depending on size)

Can I just say really quickly how much I love this style of art? You look at it and for me, it takes me to a completely new time. A new era.

Back to the art.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
"Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou," I said, "art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore–
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!"
Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."
Love Edgar Allan Poe? Love ravens? So do I!
$20.00+ (depending on size)

Sorry, but I had to quote Poe just so you can see how gorgeous this bird is! Oh, and he's wearing a bow tie!

Remember how earlier I mentioned a cat in a sailor suit? Well, I thought I'd show you just exactly what I mean.
$20.00+ (depending on size)

If my cat tolerated it, I'd try to recreate this painting. Sadly, he most likely would hate me for 1000 years.

And for our last and final piece, a walk down memory lane. If you're old enough, you remember "Goosebumps" books, and one in particular called "Slappy the Dummy." When I saw this one, it brought me right back to reading it during, after, and before school. I absolutely loved that one book, and I'm not sure why. In fact, I loved ALL those books- but that one I couldn't put down.
$20.00+ (depending on size)

Confession: I used to be scared of ventriloquist dolls (think Dale Gribble in "King of the Hill"), but I've grown to really like them.

Lisa has TONS of others at her Etsy shop, including Jules Verne, Edgar Allan Poe, and even skeletons. So go browse and fall in love.

Now we come to where you can find her in other social media areas:
